Tswalu Private Desert Reserve - a member of Relais & Chateaux.
Situated in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, on the edge of the Kalahari desert, Tswalu is the largest privately owned game reserve is South Africa. Covering a MALARIA FREE area of over 100,000 hectares of harsh thorn bush, immense skies, monumental mountains and red rolling sand dunes, Tswalu is the Africa of a thousand years ago.
A visit to Tswalu is unique in many ways, offering an exclusive, private and tailor made experience. Tswalu has 40 different species of animals and over 250 different species of birds and owes its existence to the need to protect some of Africa`s most endangered species. Here is a living conservation project of international significance, not simply a safari destination.
Urgent priority was given to the breeding of the rare Desert Black Rhinos, the Roan and Sable antelope, the disease free Cape Buffalo and the rare King Cheetah.
Tswalu`s main Relais & Chateaux lodge was designed to blend in to the Kalahari environment and is surrounded by nine individual suites. Relax in cossetted luxury in your fully air conditioned thatch and stone suite with its antique colonial furniture, tribal artefacts, telephone, open fire, spacious lounge area, private sundeck, bathroom with inside and outside shower with uninterrupted views across the spectacular Kalahari plains.
The central lodge houses a main lounge and dining area giving access to the veranda, year round outdoor heated swimming pool, covered pool dining terrace, floodlit waterhole and traditional African open air boma.
Enjoy game drives in open sided canopied Land Rovers with experienced rangers and trackers, horse back safaris, walking safaris, bird watching, star gazing and golf at nearby Sishen Golf Club. Enjoy sundowners on the crest of a lantern lit dune watching the magnificient Kalahari sunset and mountain dining at the Helderberg Mountain Platform with views of over 70 kms.
