KwaZulu-Natal`s game parks and the
Greater St Lucia Lake
World Heritage Site lie spread across Zululand on the subtropical
coastal plain and on the upper reaches of some of its larger rivers.
An extensive network of Nature Reserves and Game Parks give refuge to several hundred bird species in addition to many antelope variants as well as the Big
Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. |

Hluhluwe Area
Set in the heart of Zululand, the area surrounding the town of Hluhluwe
not only host the oldest game reserve in Africa - the
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park
- but also a number of private game reserves and lodges.
Further east
the False Bay Park area, situated along the western shores of Lake St.
Lucia with a variety of habitats, has a number of exclusive lodges on
the Lake.
Louwsburg Area
The magnificent
Ithala
Game Reserve, tumbling from the heights of the Ngotshe Mountains
down into a deep valley revealing the world`s oldest rock formations, is
situated close to Louwsburg with the
Mkuze Falls Private Reserve in the
same area.
Mkuze Area
Mkhuze Game Reserve
constitutes the north western spur of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park
and is renowned as a mecca for bird lovers with more than 420 bird
species on record. The
Leopard Mountain Game
Lodge is found in the
surrounding area.
Phinda Private Game Reserve
The plains of Phinda are the roaming grounds of buffalo, white rhino,
elephant, giraffe, impala, zebra and wildebeest. Predators such as lion,
leopard, cheetah and hyena wait their turn in the shadows.
Pongola Area
Pongola Game Reserve forms the heart of a large ecological area, with a
number of exclusive lodges.
Ndumo Game Reserve
It is best known for its magnificent bird life with game species such as
nyala, bushbuck, impala, red duiker, suni, black and white rhino,
hippopotamus and a large population of crocodiles. |

Tembe Elephant Park
This remote park, deep in an area of sand forests, pans and wetlands
lies on the border with Mozambique and is one of the largest elephant
parks in South Africa.
Kosi Bay Nature Reserve
The Reserve lies on the coast in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal and
is home to a large variety of birds and animals including hippos and
crocs.
Sodwana Bay
Renowned for its sport fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, Sodwana is
situated on the coast within the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.
